Power of the Pen is a monthly event brought to you by Just Harvest and other allies.
Each month we’ll discuss a key policy issue that’s causing hunger and economic hardship in Allegheny County. Then we’ll write letters to government officials and newspapers, calling for change.
This month’s focus: Keep Families Together!
Cohosts: Just Harvest, Casa San Jose, our coalition partners in Pittsburgh UNITED, and the Thomas Merton Center
Immigrant families face separation constantly, this time thanks to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. A new HUD proposal would evict mixed-status families from subsidized housing, requiring everyone except senior citizens to prove citizenship. People applying for asylum or a green card could no longer stay with any U.S. citizens — even spouses or siblings — who receive housing assistance. Over 100,000 families would face either eviction or being torn apart if this rule is put in place.
Join us to submit your comment as part of the federal public comment period and take a stand against this cruel policy. All you need to bring is a willingness to share how it would affect you or your community.
