June 19 Power of the Pen: Stop Trump from Re-defining Poverty
Power of the Pen is a monthly event brought to you by Just Harvest.

Speaking out is a way to exercise your rights.

Speaking out effectively is a way to change the world. Coordinated letter writing to those in power is a proven way to make progress on critical issues. So join us for Power of the Pen.

Each month we’ll discuss a key policy issue that’s causing hunger and economic hardship in Allegheny County. Then we’ll write letters to government officials and newspapers, calling for change.

President Trump’s administration has proposed a new economic tool that would make measuring poverty in the U.S. even more inaccurate. It would lower the official poverty level by underestimating how much the cost of living goes up each year. Fewer people would be recognized by the government as living in poverty and thereby eligible for assistance programs like SNAP/food stamps, Medicaid, energy assistance, and school meals. It’s a cruel gimmick to shirk responsibility for helping those in need.

All you need to bring is a willingness to put pen to paper to share your perspective of how this would affect you or your community.
