The Associated Press news story “IRS pays billions not owed” ignored several essential facts.
The figure of $13 billion in errant Earned Income Tax Credits comes from the Treasury Department’s own extensive analysis of the EITC program. Unfortunately, 66 percent of EITC tax returns are filed by commercial tax preparers who benefit from the higher fees generated by higher tax refunds….
