Pittsburgh area farmers markets are in full swing, in part thanks to all the delicious summer fruit that’s now ripe for picking. Peaches, nectarines, and apples are plentiful, the berries are fresh off the vine, and ohhh, those tomatoes.
Not to mention all the amazing vendors with their fresh prepared foods. It’s amazing what farm-fresh food tastes like — when it wasn’t made to travel thousands of miles.
Part of making Fresh Access and Food Bucks a success — our programs to make area farmers markets accessible and more affordable to food stamps shoppers — is just making sure people know about the farmers markets and these programs. It also helps to make sure farmers markets are welcoming places where food stamp shoppers won’t be intimidated or judged (unlike what too often happens at check-out in grocery stores).
This week (and all farmers market season, until Thanksgiving!) help get the word out about how family-friendly farmers markets are.
Yes, supporting farmers markets rewards local farmers during market season. But making farmers market shopping a family activity boosts the health and well-being of our children and our communities in so many great ways and for years to come.
THE WHAT-WHERE-WHEN
To help introduce children and families to all the healthy deliciousness farmers markets have to offer, Just Harvest and Adagio Health will be providing kids activities at the following farmers markets starting this week! All children under age 18 can participate in the activities, crafts, games, cooking demos, and give-aways. Each child will receive a $2 Food Bucks coupon (as supplies last).

Just kidding. And seriously: we’d love to see you there, whether you’re accompanied or solo.
