Here in Pittsburgh, the Citiparks Farmers Markets, with the help of the Just Harvest Organization, are testing out a way to allow customers to pay with their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Access cards, credit, or debit cards. Cards are swiped through an electronic card reader and the patron is given wooden tokens to spend at participating market stalls. Similar systems are in place and popping up in markets across the country.
