Understanding US Taxes

Federal Tax Return: A federal tax return is a document that individuals submit to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) each year to report their income, calculate their tax liability, and determine whether they owe additional taxes or are eligible for a refund. This document provides a detailed breakdown of an individual’s financial situation for the previous year, including income sources, deductions, credits, and any taxes already paid.

Filing a federal tax return is a legal requirement for most individuals, and failing to do so can result in penalties and interest charges. It is important to accurately report all income and expenses to ensure compliance with the tax laws and avoid any potential issues with the IRS.

State Tax Return: A state tax return is a form that individuals file with their respective state governments to report income earned within that particular state. In addition to filing a federal tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), individuals must also file a state tax return if they meet the income or residency requirements set forth by the state.

State tax returns allow state governments to collect revenue to fund various programs and services, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The rules and regulations surrounding state tax returns vary by state, so it is important to consult with a tax professional or utilize online resources for guidance.

Local Tax Return: A local tax return is a form that individuals or businesses are required to fill out and submit to their local government in order to report their income and calculate the amount of tax they owe. This tax is separate from federal and state taxes, and is specific to the municipality or county in which the taxpayer resides.

Local tax returns can vary greatly depending on the jurisdiction, but often include income earned within that specific area, such as wages, rental income, and business profits. The tax rate and deductions may also differ from federal and state taxes, so it is important to carefully review the instructions provided by the local government.

ITIN Application and Renewals: An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number. This includes non-resident aliens, resident aliens, and their dependents.

If you are in need of an ITIN, you can apply for one by submitting Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, along with required supporting documentation to the IRS. The process must be completed in person at our tax site.

Additionally, ITINs expire if not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive years. If your ITIN has expired or is nearing expiration, you can renew it by submitting a Form W-7 and supporting documentation to the IRS.

Amendments: Tax amendments refer to changes made to a tax return after it has been filed with the tax authorities. These changes are usually made to correct errors or provide additional information that was not included in the original filing. In some cases, taxpayers may also need to amend their tax returns to claim additional deductions or credits that were not originally claimed.

It is important to note that tax amendments must be filed within a certain timeframe, typically within three years of the original tax return filing date. Failure to amend a tax return when necessary can result in penalties and interest charges.

Payment Plan: An IRS federal payment plan is a program offered by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that allows taxpayers to pay off their tax debt over time in monthly installments. This can be a helpful option for individuals who are unable to pay their tax bill in full at once.

The IRS offers various payment plan options, including short-term payment plans and long-term installment agreements. These plans typically require taxpayers to make monthly payments towards their tax debt until it is paid off in full.
