Starting Monday, four Post-Gazette staffers will eat on $6 a day each as part of the SNAP Challenge.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, colloquially known as food stamps (though there are no stamps and recipients use debit cards to buy food), is under scrutiny in Congress. As Congress debates the Farm Bill, billions in cuts to the program are being proposed, as well as changes that would make it harder for people to qualify for food aid. A number of members of the House of Representatives have expressed concerns that Americans are becoming too dependent on food stamps.
