Pittsburgh, PAJust Harvest and the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council are hosting this nonpartisan event to educate Allegheny County voters about candidates for contested races in the Pa. Primary Election on May 16. In the first half of the event, candidates for Mayor of Pittsburgh will debate critical policy issues relating to food access and economic justice in Pittsburgh, moderated by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Chris Potter.

In the second half of this event, candidates for one City Council seat, one Allegheny County Council seat, and four Pittsburgh Public School Board seats will make prepared statements responding to the following questions:

  • As an Allegheny County Council member, what will you do to prevent and fight food insecurity and hunger in your district? In your answer, please address: government accountability, basic human needs, racial equity, and healthy food access, including barriers which create food deserts.
  • As a Pittsburgh City Council member, what will you do to prevent and fight hunger and food insecurity in your district? In your answer, please address: government accountability, basic human needs, racial equity, and healthy food access, including barriers which create food deserts.
  • As a PPS Director, what will you do to improve the well-being of low-income Pittsburgh children? In your answer please address: child nutrition and equitable development (including affordable housing).

This is a free event, open to the public.

Just Harvest has been improving government’s response to hunger and poverty in Allegheny County since 1986, through a focus on public policy, safety net programs, and community food access.

The Pittsburgh Food Policy Council, incubated at Penn State Center Pittsburgh, serves as a collaborative advisory organization, bringing together stakeholders from diverse food-related sectors to examine, develop and improve the food system of our city and region.
