Food Revolution Day 2014 FlyerFood Revolution Day Pittsburgh 2014 Celebrates Food Culture and the People Building It

The 2nd annual Food Revolution Day Pittsburgh 2014 at Obama Academy on May 16th from 3-6pm will celebrate our region’s food culture and the people who work together to build it.

Food Revolution Day Pittsburgh 2014 is part of an on-going initiative through the Food Revolution Pittsburgh Cooking Club program at Obama to support students and enliven our community about food access and youth empowerment. The one-day event is designed to provide an opportunity for Pittsburgh to dine and enjoy good food as a community and a city while engaging in conversation, creativity and activities that reflect living well.

Along with live music, over 85 nonprofit and local organizations (including Just Harvest) will host interactive exhibits, and 20 of Pittsburgh’s top chefs will cook for the crowd on the athletic field. Activities will focus on building and sustaining healthy communities and are no cost to attendees. Everyone eats for free!

Local restaurant entrepreneurs, our community’s youth and a cohort of invested stakeholders including the Global Shapers Pittsburgh Hub have raised over $30,000 to throw this event. A generous donation from Highmark is also making the event possible.

The Vetri Foundation will attend from Philadelphia to cook for students and families.

Participating Pittsburgh chefs include Kevin Sousa of Superior Motors, Chad Townsend of Salt of the Earth, Keith Fuller of Root 174, staff from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Franktuary, NOLA, Big Burrito, and Pittsburgh Community Kitchens. Juice Up 412 will do juicing demonstrations.

Dr. Linda Lane, superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools and Saleem Ghubril of the Pittsburgh Promise are confirmed to address the crowd regarding Pittsburgh Public School’s healthy eating and living initiatives and the important role of education in building our city’s culture. Dan Gilman, City Councilman for District 8, and Representative Jake Wheatley will be in attendance to help serve food to attendees.

The Food Revolution Pittsburgh Cooking Club was started by Bar Marco in October 2012, inspired by Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. We teach kids how to cook every Tuesday after school at Obama Academy.

Jamie Oliver’s International Food Revolution Day is a global day of action to make a stand for good food and essential cooking skills. Food Revolution Day raises awareness around the globe about the importance of real food and food education by focusing on three simple actions – cook it, share it, live it.
